Tanger, Morocco

Socco Alto

Shopping centre located in the northeastern residential area of Tangier, in a green slanted plot, near a river and its flood zones. From the start one of the objectives was to minimize the centre’s visual impact and to use the plot’s characteristics to achieve a sustainable and integrated architecture. Therefore, the centre follows the inclination of the land, hides, buries and dilutes itself on it. It is divided in a few volumes stacked and embedded, that appear as pure, white, folded prisms. This contemporary architecture incorporates many reinterpreted local references. The present state of the plot served as an inspiration for the green roof that folds and reaches the ground, thus nearing greenery to the public areas. This brings warmth and is a differential element of the centre. Designed to the scale of the city and the visitor, the centre, inspired by Tangier’s traditional markets, is built around an open street, a promenade, a succession of patios where the green roof creates a spatial rhythm characteristic of an outdoor stroll.
