Vialia Vigo Center: an approach to integrate railway and commercial uses
· October 11, 2020
Located in the Vigo-Urzaiz Railway Station, the Vialia Center project is a joint undertaking with Thom Mayne (Morphosis Architects), promoted by Ceetrus. The works seek to modernize Vigo’s urban structure with a design that will harmoniously blend their railway and shopping environs.
The L35 design features a linear mall on two levels which connect a central atrium with two plazas at each end of the building. To the East is a large outdoor plaza for staging cultural events and which will serve to complement the shopping experience with a wide offering of leisure and catering venues. The station roof forms a large public square becoming a key urban destination, overlooking the Ria de Vigo estuary, integrating the buildings skylights that funnels natural light to the interior spaces. Inauguration is scheduled for the end of 2020.
