As part of the Gran Canaria Architecture Week, this project will open the program with an official presentation, alongside the exhibition “The Contemporary Stadium”, promoted by the Instituto Insular de Deportes de Gran Canaria, at the Martín Chirino Foundation in the Castillo de la Luz, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, on October 6 at 7:30 pm.

The signing of the contract for the renovation and expansion of the Gran Canaria Stadium marks the beginning of the ambitious project “La Nube”, which will transform this venue into an architectural and sustainable landmark, ready to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

As part of Gran Canaria Architecture Week, a conference will be held on the comprehensive renovation and expansion of the New Gran Canaria World Cup Stadium, presented by architects Tristán López-Chicheri and Alejandro Lorca, on behalf of the design team formed by L35 Architects and Estudio 0710, together with representatives from the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, the Instituto Insular de Deportes de Gran Canaria, and the Gran Canaria Architects’ AssociationYou can register here.

The conference will take place at the Martín Chirino Foundation, in the Castillo de la Luz in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, on October 6 at 7:30 pm. During the session, the winning project of the competition will be presented in detail, as part of the major large-scale developments planned for Gran Canaria.

With a design that combines innovation, functionality, and environmental responsibility, L35 Architects builds on its renowned trajectory in sports architecture, adding the Gran Canaria Stadium to iconic projects such as the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, the Simón Bolívar Stadium, and the Nemesio Camacho Stadium (El Campín).

Following the conference, and throughout the entire week, visitors will be able to enjoy the exhibition organized by L35 Architects and promoted by the Instituto Insular de Deportes de Gran Canaria, showcasing models of seven contemporary stadiums designed by the firm, with the Gran Canaria Stadium as the undisputed centerpiece.

This exhibition is part of the itinerant showcase “The Contemporary Stadium”, which explores the evolution and design of modern arenas.

One of the most distinctive aspects of “La Nube” is its holistic approach to sustainability, conceived as a transversal principle of the project. This is particularly visible in the stadium’s envelope, which will integrate innovative materials that, while giving it an iconic identity, are also designed to maximize natural light and enhance ventilation, thereby significantly reducing energy consumption.

The Gran Canaria Stadium aims to be much more than a football venue. The ambition is to turn it into a social and cultural hub, capable of attracting international visitors while becoming a genuine meeting point for the people of Gran Canaria.

Senior Partner Alejandro Lorca emphasizes:
“Our goal is to create a stadium that is not only iconic from an architectural standpoint, but also responds to the needs of the community and is aligned with the challenges of climate change. We want ‘La Nube’ to become a symbol of sustainability and modernity.”

Project Lead Guillermo Gusó adds:
“This is a unique opportunity for Gran Canaria —an inspiring project that should bring everyone together under the common goal of hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup.”
