Last April 2nd, the innovative shopping centre Almazar located in front of the Agdal wall in Marrakech, opened its doors. Promoted by Best Real Estate, the complex will become a centre of commercial and leisure activities as well as an area of coexistence and reference to the city and the Marrakech environment.
Barcelona, April 5th 2010.- Designed by L35, Almazar complex is of contemporary design, with daylight flooding in and pure volumes framed by large roofs “We did not want to make a conventional European or American shopping centre, closed, acclimatized, but we took the inspiration from the traditional local markets and souks resulting in an open urban market, organized in well-proportioned streets and squares and small plazas which remind us of a city layout” explains Marcel Sarrabayrouse, architect responsible for the project Marcel Sarrabayrouse.
The contemporary architecture uses elements of local tradition such as material, colour and the simplicity of shapes. The treatment of light was especially considered: the pergolas and canopies as filters create an atmosphere which recalls city markets. These elements also have other functions: from highlighting a particular architectural element to allowing a scale change which generates a more welcoming ambiance.
The volume strengthens this architectural heritage: the horizontality of the building is interrupted by singular elements (towers, façade-walls, balconies and roofs) which help identify the different spaces and introduce a vertical component.
The centre is developed on three retail levels and two underground parking levels. In the underground level the textures and colors show a clear inspiration from Earth elements. In the street level, dedicated to Water, we find a half-covered promenade space where shop windows invite a visit. A central promenade articulates the leisure areas on the upper level evokes the Air and plays with elements of sky and light.
